ABOUT THE TRUE COLORS TOUR
True Colors Concerts is a music touring company that is the brainchild of Cyndi Lauper and was established as a vehicle for her to empower the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community to reengage and take part in the struggle for full equality.
The first tour was launched in 2007 and traveled to 16 cities in the US with talent that included Cyndi, Erasure, Debbie Harry, Margaret Cho, Rosie O'Donnell, Rufus Wainwright, The Gossip, The Dresden Dolls and many others.
True Colors partnered with GLBT non-profit groups the Human Rights Campaign, PFLAG and the Matthew Shepard Foundation and corporate sponsors Orbitz, LOGO TV and Sirius Satellite Radio to celebrate diversity and encourage support of passing the Hate Crimes bill in the US Senate (the bill was eventually passed, in part due to the support garnered by the tour). This was a major victory for GLBT rights.
In 2008, True Colors expanded to 24 cities and included a wider group of talent including Cyndi Lauper, The B-52s, Sarah McLachlan, Indigo Girls, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Joan Armatrading, Tegan and Sara, Regina Spektor and Carson Kressley. The tour's messaging shifted to focus on encouraging patrons to "Get Out the Vote" and encouraged activism within the community. The tour partnered with iTunes, American Airlines and Sirius Satellite Radio to spread our message as widely as possible. The reviews of the shows were extraordinary.
In 2008, the True Colors Fund, the non-profit "sister" to the True Colors Tour, was created to facilitate year-round involvement in the advancement of GLBT equality and support for the GLBT community. See enclosed one-sheet on the True Colors Fund.
In 2009, True Colors partnered with comedian Wanda Sykes to present her critically acclaimed comedy show and launched the True Colors Cabaret, a monthly series in New York City featuring artists such as Jason Mraz, Rufus Wainwright Sara Bareilles, Cyndi Lauper and many others.. The True Colors Fund will launch an extensive, in-depth and action-oriented public awareness and education campaign to engage the GLBT and allied community to support the organizations working on their behalf every day through volunteerism and philanthropy. The True Colors Fund is currently collaborating with the West End Intergenerational Residence to create the True Colors Residence, permanent supportive housing for homeless LGBT young people, 18-24 years old, in Central Harlem.
True Colors is looking forward to bringing a destination festival to New York City in 2010.
